Exhibition “Pernambuco by J. Borges”.

The exhibition “Pernambuco by J. Borges” explores the natural and cultural richness of Pernambuco, represented by the landscapes of the Zona da Mata; the vegetation of the Agreste; the Sertão; music and folklore; the São João festival; Luiz Gonzaga's show; illustrious personalities such as Ariano Suassuna, Francisco Brennand, and Our Lady of the Conception; social issues related to water scarcity and rural life; the presence of Lampião among the poor and courtship in the countryside, on horseback, thus exploring broad and central themes that make Pernambuco's culture a unique chapter in the national repertoire..

José Francisco Borges, better known as J. Borges, is one of the masters of cordel literature, one of the most celebrated artists in Latin America, and the most recognized Brazilian woodcut artist in the world.

J. Borges has received numerous awards and distinctions, among which stand out those granted by the Pró-Memória Foundation (Brasília, 1984), the Joaquim Nabuco Foundation (Recife, 1990), the V Salvador Valero International Biennial (Trujillo/Venezuela, 1995), the Order of Cultural Merit (Ministry of Culture, 1999), and the UNESCO prize in the Educational/Cultural Action category. In 2002, he was one of thirteen artists chosen to illustrate the United Nations annual calendar.
The woodcut "Life in the Forest" was featured in a 2006 article in The New York Times.

His woodcuts illustrate books published in Brazil, France, Portugal, Switzerland, and the United States.

Among other works, he is the author of the following: “Gravuras de J. Borges” (Recife: Galeria Nega Fulô, 1973), “Xilogravuras de J. Borges” (Recife: Galeria Ranulpho, 1975), “No Tempo que os Bichos Falavam” (Olinda: Casa da Criança de Olinda and Instituto Nacional de Folclore, 1983), and “Poesia e Gravura de J. Borges” in partnership with Silvia Coimbra (Recife: no publisher, 1993). His artwork can also be found on album covers such as Quinteto Violado, Festival de Violeiros, Nordeste Cordel, Repentes e Canção.
